Journey to Respiratory Therapy
Childhood events can define a lifetime of service. Divone Morris has a special passion and commitment for being a respiratory therapist. At the age of 11, Divone watched and waited outside the emergency room while respiratory therapists, nurses and other clinicians gave their all to try to save the life of his infant sister. Divone knew at that moment that he wanted to “pay it forward” and make that same difference in others’ lives.
He began his journey at the University of Arizona as a pre-nursing major. He then moved in a slightly different direction and pursued his current career as a respiratory therapist. Opportunities to make a real, positive impact as well as the flexibility and variety such a career offers, drew him to the field of respiratory therapy.
When it came time to begin his life as a professional RT, Divone chose Northside Hospital. When evaluating his career options, he came to Northside for the inspiring culture Northside fosters. Divone says, “I believe in the culture and focus that the hospital has. Delivering hospitality from the heart is a philosophy we all share at Northside.”
Life at Northside
At Northside, Divone’s day is unpredictable and exciting as it starts with meeting the respiratory therapist from the previous shift. Together, they review any new orders or modifications to existing orders. The meeting helps Divone formulate a game plan which enables him to manage his time and deliver exceptional patient care throughout the day. He also collaborates closely with the nursing staff on his shift to build rapport and ensure continuity of care. Respiratory Therapists engage in various settings throughout Northside – including the emergency department, ICU, NICU, labor and delivery, and general floors.
Working as a Respiratory Therapist provides Divone with an incredibly rewarding career. He says, “The most rewarding part of my role is knowing that I can make a difference in the world. Each day I fight for a better tomorrow for the generations to come.”
What advice would Divone give an individual aspiring for a career in respiratory therapy? “Believe in yourself. Even when you feel like you can’t, you can. There is never an easy moment in respiratory therapy. A wise woman once told me, ‘When you can’t breathe, there’s nothing else in the world that matters’.”

After delivering triplets at Northside Hospital, Lisa knew she wanted to give back to the hospital and community as a nurse. 14 years later, she started her nursing degree. In 2020, she joined the Northside Family as a nurse resident. This is her story:
“Congratulations! You’re pregnant with triplets!”
When Lisa heard these words in 2003, she knew everything was about to change. Her family of three was about to become a family of six. While Lisa had a really good experience with the delivery of her first child at another Atlanta hospital, it was Northside Hospital’s reputation for delivering and caring for premature babies that led her to change care providers.
“Since this [premature babies] was very likely for us, I changed my OB/GYN to one that could deliver at Northside. During my pregnancy with the triplets, I spent a short time on the high-risk pregnancy (HRP) unit and I was impressed with my care,” Lisa shared.
At 29 ½ weeks gestation, Lisa delivered the triplets on Mother’s Day. She reflected, “This was quite a gift! I knew our premature babies were in the very best hands at Northside Hospital’s NICU. One-by-one, they came home at four weeks, six weeks, and eight weeks of age. They each had their own challenges at birth that they were able to overcome and they are now healthy, 16-year-old teenagers.”
Shortly after they all came home, Lisa realized the experience had re-ignited something in her: her passion to become a nurse. When Lisa had first attended college, she’d studied nursing. But at the influence of others, she ended up changing her major and pursuing a different path. Yet right after bringing her three babies home, Lisa knew she wanted to give back and care for patients the way she had been cared for at Northside.
Knowing that the timing might not be best while she had three babies at home, Lisa took other steps to assuage her desire to help others. She joined a team of volunteers at Northside Hospital called “Boredom Busters.” She says, “Our duties included going to the HRP floor on a regular basis to bring magazines, crafts, and comfort to moms on bed rest. I was able to encourage them since I had been on 16 weeks of bed rest, as well, during my pregnancy.”
Then, in 2017, when all four of Lisa’s kids were older and well-established in their schools, the timing finally felt right for Lisa to go back to school to earn her nursing degree. To her younger self, Lisa might say, “Follow your heart and go into nursing.” But she couldn’t be happier where she is now. And she recognizes the benefits that came from taking a “non-traditional” path to get here. She says, “I have many life experiences that play a role in my success as a nurse and caring for patients.”
In 2020, Lisa joined the Northside Family as a Labor & Delivery nurse resident. Our nurse residency programs are designed for recent grads and newly-licensed nurses, including second-career nurses, as well as experienced nurses interested in switching specialties and nurses that have recently completed a reentry program. Lisa is proof that you can pursue nursing as a second career – in fact, it’s much more common than one might think!
About her decision to get her nursing degree, Lisa says, “It was one of the best decisions I’ve made and I am looking forward to the next leg of my journey. I will finally be where I have longed to be and that is in Women’s Services, caring for pregnant moms and their babies – back at Northside Hospital! I can’t think of a better way to give back to a hospital and community that gave so much to me, than to pay it forward.”
Paid parental leave is important for parents and children alike. When parents bring new children home, having time away from work provides families with opportunities to bond, adjust, and more easily balance the needs of work and home. The arrival of a child can take many forms. For Allison and her husband, it was through adoption.
Allison is an RN at Northside Hospital Cherokee. While she’s worked on the oncology floor at Cherokee for a year and a half, she’s been a nurse for five. She shared, “Northside is by far the best place I’ve ever worked. I live 54 miles from the hospital and still drive in because I know I won’t find a place I feel as great to work for.”
Even before Allison joined the Northside Family, she and her husband had begun the journey of adoption. After a three year process to adopt their foster child, they were finally able to adopt last month! With the Adoption Paid-Time Off Program that Northside Hospital provides, Allison could confidently take paid time off to be at home with her family. She said, “Having this time at home and November being National Adoption Month is even more special.”
It was the little things that made Allison’s time off especially meaningful to her. As a nurse, Allison works long hours, often leaving home in the morning before her daughter is awake and returning home after she’s gone to bed. When her shifts fall on back-to-back days, that can mean going several days without seeing her daughter. So being home for three weeks meant being home every night for bedtime stories. It meant being able to take and pick her daughter up from school every day. “I got to help her with her Thanksgiving play, take walks after school, and her favorite thing to do—play on the playground,” Allison said.
The time off also gave Allison and her husband some firsts of their own. Allison reflected, “It was the first time I got to be home on Halloween, so we got to go trick-or-treating as a family. We threw her an amazing Halloween-themed adoption party to celebrate!”
At Northside Hospital, we offer many benefits to our team. Benefits focused on health and wellness, financial health, work-life balance and beyond. It’s crucial that our team is and feels supported and empowered to do their best, at work and in their life work. We’re proud to offer an adoption benefit that gives Northside parents-to-be paid time off following the arrival of their child. No new parent should have to choose between time with family and missed pay or drained PTO.
For Allison, the benefit is a blessing. She shared: “It is amazing to work for a company that provides adoption leave. I already love working for Northside, but the little things like that make it an even better company to work for. Thanks so much for being such an amazing company to work for!”
When it comes to the nurse residency programs at Northside, we knew that the COVID-19 pandemic would present new challenges for the Fall 2020 cohort. These Northside newcomers are having a nurse residency unlike any other, so we wanted to hear their thoughts on working at Northside in the midst of COVID-19. Here’s what they had to say:
Sarina
Northside Hospital Atlanta- BMT
Working as a new grad in the midst of this pandemic has been both challenging and rewarding. I have been able to see our Northside team come together and support each other during this trying time.
Alexia
Northside Hospital Cherokee
The veteran nurses, management, and overall care team offer a supportive environment, contrary to the belief that “baby nurses” are often left to fend for themselves. My team has been nothing but understanding and supportive. I feel as though my fellow coworkers truly want me to succeed through the residency program.
Daniel
Northside Hospital Forsyth
I feel safe working for a company such as Northside during this pandemic. Being a nurse is truly amazing and so rewarding.
Brittoria
Northside Hospital Atlanta
Rewarding. I’m thankful for how nursing school and the training I am getting is preparing me for the changes in the hospital.
Lina
Northside Hospital Atlanta
Working as a new grad nurse in the midst of COVID-19 has been challenging to say the least but I’m also really grateful. To be able to adapt during high stress moments has helped me become a better nurse.

Surely you can’t be reading that right, right? A pension plan in 2020? Maybe you’ve heard of a pension plan from your parents or grandparents, but those are a thing of the past! Or are they?
Make no mistake, the pension plan is still alive and well at Northside Hospital!
Northside is the only area hospital that offers a pension plan. As long as you work with us, we save money on your behalf to be accessed during retirement!
With so few companies still offering pensions, many younger workers don’t understand how pension plans work, since they’ve never been eligible for one. Free money sounds great, but… what’s the catch?
There’s no catch! Northside saves money for you throughout your employment with us for you to access in retirement. We fund the pension benefit at no cost to you — meaning you’re earning extra money for your future just by coming to work!
(By the way, this program is separate from and in addition to our generous 403(b) Retirement Plan – similar to the more common 401(k) plans – in which employees set aside money from their paychecks pre-tax and Northside funds additional contributions to your account to boost your retirement savings!)
Breaking down the pension plan
What is the pension plan?
The pension plan is a defined benefit retirement plan. For this type of plan, Northside does all the work, including funding and managing your pension benefit. When you retire, you will start receiving monthly payments based on your average salary during your employment and how long you worked for Northside. That means that the longer you work for Northside, the more you earn in the plan. After five years of service, you become fully vested in the plan. In other words, you become eligible for payments upon retirement after 5 years of eligible employment. If you leave Northside before becoming vested, you’ll forfeit any unvested pension.
How does it work?
Meet Abby, a 35-year-old NICU nurse making $55,000 per year.
In addition to her salary, Abby accrues about 9%* of her salary toward pension benefits every year. This amount varies each year and is ultimately based on her salary and years worked at Northside. If she stays at Northside and retires at age 65, she’ll have earned $40,000 in pension income a year for the rest of her life — a pension worth over $500,000 in today’s dollars!*
* Assumes 3.50% annual pay increases, and that Abby works until 65.
It’s that simple! By working at Northside, you are earning extra money that’s waiting for you when you retire after 5 years of employment. Stay longer, earn more! Get a promotion, earn some more! As the only hospital in the Atlanta area with a pension plan, Northside is clearly the smart choice!
It takes a lot of coordinated efforts for a healthcare facility to run smoothly. When you think of hospital jobs, you may think of the staff you typically see on television hospital dramas: doctors, nurses, receptionists etc. Those who work in healthcare, however, know there are many others who play a major role in delivering the quality patient experience Northside is known for.
So even if you never went to nursing school or thought of working in a hospital, it may be just the place for you! In addition to the great benefits at Northside, there is the added satisfaction of knowing that you are helping your community by assisting in delivering a vital service.
Here are ten of our current open roles at Northside Hospital that you might not know exist:
This role is ideal for someone who has prior experience working in a restaurant or other food service role, but is ready for a change and looking to step into the hospital environment. The responsibilities of this role include reading patient menus to patients, editing patient selections to meet restrictions associated with diet orders, and communicating between the nursing units and the Food & Nutrition Department.
This position is for experienced IT professionals that have a thorough background in server building, maintenance, and automation. Their job is vital to ensuring our computer systems stay online and are secure so our staff can access the information they need 24/7.
The Revenue Integrity Supervisor is responsible for ensuring that the hospital Chargemaster is up-to-date and compliant with federal and state regulations and that our staff are charging for services correctly. This role is crucial to our operations because an accurate Chargemaster allows us to work with health insurance companies to make sure our patients are getting the most out of their healthcare experience.
This role supports the crucial computer programs that help our clinical and financial staff carry out their jobs. With programs that deal with patient records, insurance billing, and more – the Senior Applications Analyst needs to be a pro at various computer systems in the healthcare environment to make sure we never miss a beat.
Social work is an incredibly important, yet often overlooked function within the healthcare environment. Healthcare social workers work with patients, their families, and significant others to break down psychosocial barriers that may inhibit their medical treatment. This role requires an advanced degree in social work or mental health, as well as prior experience in the mental health field.
The Environmental Services Team is the lifeblood of the Northside Hospital family! These truly essential employees ensure that our patients, as well as fellow employees, have a clean and safe environment. With on-the-job training and no prior experience or certification requirements, this role is the perfect entry point for someone interested in working in the healthcare field.
¿Hablas español? This role is responsible for providing face-to-face interpreting services for Spanish-speaking patients and their families as it relates to their medical care, as well as documenting translation to enhance patients’ comprehension of medical procedures, treatment, follow-up care, and more.
This position is the Amazon Prime of Northside! Responsible for distributing supplies and equipment to our departments and keeping track of inventory levels, supply chain techs work to make sure the staff at Northside always have the right supplies & equipment at the right time to be able to deliver a great patient experience.
Monitor technicians support other clinical staff by observing patients’ biomedical electronic devices and watching for regular or irregular measurements to report back to nurses and doctors. This position requires the completion of a Basic Arrhythmia Course or the satisfactory completion of an arrhythmia competency exam with a score of 85% or higher.
This role is responsible for disinfecting, sterilizing, and assembling surgical instruments, supplies, and equipment in preparation for surgery teams. By prepping these materials ahead of time, this position helps keep surgical procedures safe and running smoothly for surgeons and their teams.
As you can see there are plenty of roles in a hospital environment that might not have their own Netflix series about them, but they certainly are essential to keeping Northside Hospital the well-oiled machine it is! Even if you have never thought about working in healthcare, you may have the skills we are looking for to help us continue to deliver top-notch patient care.

Alison D, a clinical dietitian at Northside, says she got lucky to have found nutrition as a career path. Her passion for food led her to a fulfilling career at Northside, helping patients get the most out of their medical care – and their lives.
About Alison
Alison didn’t know what she was getting herself into when she registered for the nutrition and dietetics program at Auburn University for her undergraduate studies. But the more she learned along the way, she discovered just how compatible nutrition was with her values and her career goals.
After completing her dietetic internship and her master’s degree at St. Louis University, she was ready to take on the challenge of being a dietitian at Northside. In 2017, she started out at a congestive heart failure clinic, where she gained experience in how nutrition affects the heart. Shortly after, she transitioned to working on a GI floor at Northside, and now she specializes in nutrition for oncology treatment. In three short years, Alison was able to experience very different sides of nutrition, which she says was an exciting way to start her career and figure out what she felt most passionate about. “You can jump around and learn a little bit about a lot,” Alison says, due to the wide variety of patient populations at Northside.
Teamwork Makes All The Difference
In her role, Alison focuses on patients receiving proper nourishment during their care at Northside. One way that she maximizes this responsibility is through emphasizing interdisciplinary teamwork and communication to ensure that her plans for a patient are complementary to the plans being administered by the doctors, pharmacists, and speech therapists. This kind of collaboration not only enhances patient care, it also provides for a rewarding work environment. “It helps make everything run smoothly, but it also opens the door to more education and more collaboration, because nutrition spans all other disciplines.”
Advice for Future Coworkers
While Alison says she became a dietitian as a result of her passion for food, she shared what else others looking to follow in her footsteps should think about when considering the field. “Be passionate about the science behind food and the research that goes into the field of dietetics. It’s a field that we’re still learning so much about all the time, and things are changing on a daily basis.” This includes keeping up with the latest research and studies and being able to relay those findings into relatable, actionable feedback to patients.
Aside from an interest in the science behind food, what does Alison hope for in a coworker? It’s simple: communication, dedication, and “a willingness to go the extra mile to provide the best patient care possible.”
